What is a
CVOR number?
A Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) number is the unique 7-digit identifier assigned by Ontario's Ministry of Transportation to every commercial carrier operating vehicles over 4,500 kg. It follows the format CVOR 1234567-ON and must be permanently displayed on both sides of the power unit above the door handle.
It serves three purposes: it links your vehicle to MTO's safety monitoring system, it identifies you during roadside inspections and weigh-scale checks, and it proves you've met the provincial licensing requirement under the Highway Traffic Act.
Without properly displayed CVOR numbers, your truck is not legally compliant for operation on Ontario roads.
Your CVOR number appears on your CVOR certificate document from MTO. If you've lost it, retrieve it through MTO's Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration office at 1-800-387-7736 with your carrier safety rating information.
MTO inspection season
starts Monday.
Ontario's Roadside Safety Blitz targets CVOR lettering first. Missing or non-compliant decals trigger Schedule 1 defects. Order today, ship tomorrow.
Blitz Survival GuideFrequently asked
questions.
- Q. 01
What compliance lettering does my commercial truck need in Ontario?
- Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and MTO regulations, commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg require four types of permanent lettering: (1) CVOR certificate number — minimum 50mm (2") on both sides of the power unit per O.Reg 424/97 and NSC Standard 10 (3" recommended for easy inspector readability); (2) Registered company name — per O.Reg 413/05; (3) GVW weight rating in kilograms — per HTA s.114; and (4) USDOT number if operating cross-border — per FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21. All must be permanently affixed — magnetic signs do not satisfy compliance requirements.
- Q. 02
Can I use magnetic signs for my CVOR number?
- No. Ontario MTO specifically prohibits magnetic signs for CVOR and registered owner name requirements. The lettering must be permanently affixed to the vehicle. Our premium cast vinyl decals are permanently applied and rated 7-10 years outdoor durability — resistant to road salt, car washes, and Ontario winter conditions.
- Q. 03
What happens if my truck is pulled over without compliant CVOR decals?
- MTO enforcement officers can issue a roadside inspection order under O.Reg 199/07. Missing or non-compliant CVOR lettering can result in a Schedule 1 defect classification, out-of-service orders, and fines. A CVOR safety record violation also increases your carrier risk rating. We offer fast turnaround for emergency compliance situations.
- Q. 04
Do I need different decals for my tractor vs my trailer?
- CVOR numbers and registered owner names are required on the power unit (tractor), not the trailer. However, trailers may require separate identification under certain fleet and lease arrangements. Contact us for fleet-specific guidance on multi-unit identification requirements.
