§ VDefinition & Glossary

What is a
CARs registration mark?

A CARs registration mark on an aircraft is the unique identifier assigned by Transport Canada when you register your aircraft. Formally governed by Canadian Aviation Regulations Standard 222, it follows the format C-FXXXX and must be permanently displayed on the fuselage sides or vertical tail surfaces.

It serves three purposes: it links your aircraft to Transport Canada's registry for airworthiness tracking and accident investigation, it identifies you during aviation authority inspections and air traffic control, and it proves you've met the federal registration requirement under the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

Without properly displayed registration marks, your aircraft is not legally airworthy for flight in Canadian airspace.

WHERE TO FIND IT

Your registration mark appears on your Certificate of Registration from Transport Canada. If you've lost it, retrieve it through Transport Canada's Civil Aviation Registry at 1-800-305-2059 with your aircraft serial number and proof of ownership.

§ VI⚠ Urgent Notice

Your drone
is unregistered.

Transport Canada requires registration for all drones over 250g. Flying without a visible C-F number brings fines up to $25,000.

§ VIIAviation Q & A

Frequently asked
questions.

Q. 01

What are the aircraft registration mark requirements under CARs Standard 222?

Under Canadian Aviation Regulations Standard 222, fixed-wing aircraft must display registration marks of minimum 30cm (12 inches) in height on the fuselage sides or vertical tail surfaces. Marks must be in Roman alphabet characters, in a colour contrasting with the aircraft surface, and follow the C-F, C-G, or C-I prefix format. Ultralights have separate minimum sizes under Standard 222, Section 4.
Q. 02

How do I register my drone with Transport Canada?

All drones weighing 250g or more must be registered with Transport Canada through the Drone Management Portal. Once registered, you receive a C-F registration number that must be permanently affixed to the drone in a location visible without disassembly. Our drone labels are weatherproof and designed for all RPAS categories — basic, advanced, and complex operations.
Q. 03

Can I use a paint marker instead of vinyl for aircraft registration marks?

While paint is acceptable under Standard 222, premium cast vinyl offers advantages: precise character sizing (critical for minimum height compliance), clean edges for character legibility, and removability without surface damage if the aircraft is repainted or resold. Our aviation-grade vinyl is rated for the temperature extremes and UV exposure of aircraft operations.
