What They Don't Tell You
MTO pulled me over at the Vineland scale — what are they looking for?
Start with documents and vehicle identification: carry the current CVOR certificate in the vehicle, keep the operator identity consistent with records, and make any optional fleet ID or GVW-style marking readable. Do not treat exterior CVOR-reference decals as a universal Ontario door-lettering rule.
My CVOR number changed — how fast do I need new decals?
Update your records first. If you use exterior CVOR-reference decals for fleet ID, replace them when the reference number changes so your truck, proof, and internal records stay aligned.
What is the difference between CVOR number, unit number, and fleet number?
CVOR identifies the Ontario commercial vehicle operator record; the certificate is carried in the vehicle. Unit numbers and fleet numbers are internal identifiers. Exterior CVOR-reference decals are useful fleet ID, not a universal Ontario CVOR display rule.
Do my trailers need markings too?
Registered owner name is required on trailers, and GVW for the combination should be displayed where required (O.Reg 413/05). Ontario O.Reg 424/97 does not mandate exterior CVOR display on power units or trailers — the CVOR certificate is carried in the cab. Many carriers add CVOR reference fleet ID lettering by choice for easy identification during inspections. Verify your situation with the MTO.
I am crossing into the US — what EXTRA markings do I need?
USDOT number (both sides, legible from 50 feet) + MC number if you are a for-hire carrier. These are FMCSA requirements under 49 CFR 390.21, completely separate from Ontario CVOR. Keep Ontario CVOR documentation current and display the US markings FMCSA requires. We sell a cross-border kit that can include CVOR reference, company name, USDOT and MC identifiers without treating them as the same legal rule.
Magnetic signs count as permanent lettering, right?
Ontario O.Reg 424/97 does not create a universal exterior CVOR display rule, so do not cite it as a magnetic-sign ban for CVOR. For markings that are actually required by another authority, choose a durable method that remains legible in service.
