What Is a Compliance Label Number on a Boat?

A compliance label number on a boat refers to one of two Transport Canada identifiers. The first — and most commonly searched — is the Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) number: the alphanumeric registration code (e.g. ON 1234 56) issued when you licence a motorized pleasure craft. This number must be displayed on both sides of the bow in block letters at least 75 mm (3 inches) high, in a colour that contrasts with the hull colour, under the Small Vessel Regulations SOR/2010-91.

The second meaning is the compliance label (builder's plate or certification plate) — a permanent sticker or riveted plate affixed to the hull by the manufacturer, typically on the transom, certifying the vessel was built to Canadian boat safety standards. This plate is factory-applied and is not a decal you order separately.

If your PCL numbers are peeling, faded, or missing, you are out of compliance with Transport Canada and can be fined during a Coast Guard or OPP inspection. Our marine-grade vinyl PCL number decals ship in 1–2 business days and meet every TP 1332 requirement. Order your replacement set below.

Boat Registration Number FAQ

What size should my boat licence number be in Canada?
Pleasure Craft Licence numbers must be at least 75 mm (3 inches) high in block letters and a colour that contrasts with the hull, per Transport Canada's Small Vessel Regulations SOR/2010-91.
Where must a pleasure craft's licence number be displayed?
The PCL number must be displayed on both sides of the bow above the waterline, in a position clearly visible from shore.
What is the difference between a licensed and registered vessel?
Licensed vessels (PCL) are for pleasure craft under 23 metres. Registered vessels are commercial or larger vessels that receive an official number and require name and port of registry markings at minimum 10 cm height.
What is a compliance label number on a boat?
In Canadian boating, 'compliance label number on a boat' most commonly refers to the Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) number — the Transport Canada registration number (e.g. ON 1234 56) that must be displayed in 75 mm (3-inch) block letters on both sides of the bow under Small Vessel Regulations SOR/2010-91. A second, separate 'compliance label' is the manufacturer's certification plate on the transom, applied at the factory, confirming the vessel was built to Canadian safety standards. If you need to replace worn or missing hull registration numbers, you need new PCL decals — available from $34.99 with 1–2 day shipping.
What is the format of Canadian boat registration numbers?
Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) numbers follow the format XX XXXX XX (2 letters, space, 4 digits, space, 2 digits). Registered vessel numbers use a different format.
Do I need boat registration numbers for a kayak or canoe?
Any boat with a motor of 10 HP (7.5 kW) or more requires a Pleasure Craft Licence. Non-motorized kayaks and canoes are exempt unless fitted with a motor.
How long do your boat number decals last?
Our marine-grade vinyl decals are rated for 5+ years of outdoor exposure, including UV, salt water, and freshwater environments. They meet all Transport Canada durability requirements.
