Proper placement of school bus identification decals is critical for MTO inspection compliance. This guide covers where each marking goes per O.Reg 612, with specific guidance by bus type.

Placement by Bus Type

Type A (Van-style, under 4,536 kg)

Compact body with limited flat panel area. Place operator name on both sides below the window line. Bus ID number on the front bumper area, rear panel, and both sides near the rear.

Type B (Small conventional, body on van chassis)

Forward-control chassis with more body panel space. Operator name on both sides between the wheel wells. Bus ID on front header panel, rear emergency door or panel, and both sides.

Type C (Conventional, most common)

The standard Ontario school bus. Operator name on both sides below the beltline, typically between the front wheel and entrance door (left) and mirrored on the right. Bus ID number on the front bumper or above the windshield, rear panel below the emergency exit, and both sides.

Type D (Transit-style, flat front)

Flat-front design with maximum panel area. Follow Type C placement principles. The flat front provides additional space for bus ID number placement.

Installation Steps

  1. Clean the surface — Wipe the application area with isopropyl alcohol (70%+). Remove all wax, polish, and road grime. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Position with transfer tape — Our decals include transfer tape. Hold the decal in position and mark alignment points with masking tape or a grease pencil.
  3. Peel and apply — Peel the backing paper partially, align the exposed edge, and press firmly. Continue peeling while smoothing with a squeegee from centre outward.
  4. Remove air bubbles — Work from the centre outward with firm squeegee pressure. Small bubbles can be punctured with a pin and pressed flat.
  5. Heat for curved surfaces — For slight body curves, use a heat gun on low setting (approx. 60°C) to make the vinyl conformable. Do not overheat.
  6. Allow to cure — Do not wash the bus for 24-48 hours after application. Full adhesive bond develops over 72 hours.
Pro Tip: Apply decals when the bus surface temperature is between 10°C and 30°C. Cold surfaces reduce initial adhesion; hot surfaces can cause premature stretching. Spring and early fall are ideal application seasons in Ontario.

Common Placement Mistakes

  • Too high — Operator name placed above the beltline where it's partially hidden by window tinting or reflections
  • Wrong side for ISA — Accessibility symbol placed on the opposite side from the accessible entrance
  • Missing front/rear bus ID — Bus number on sides only; inspectors check front and rear
  • Overlapping body panels — Decal applied across a panel seam, causing premature peeling
  • Insufficient contrast — Using a light-coloured vinyl on Chrome Yellow instead of black

Making Your Bus Inspection-Ready

Before your annual MTO inspection, walk around the bus and verify:

  • All markings are legible from 15 metres in daylight
  • No peeling, fading, or cracking on any decal
  • Letter heights meet minimum specifications (measure with a ruler if uncertain)
  • Operator name matches your current operating authority registration
  • Bus ID number matches fleet records
  • Accessibility symbol is present on all equipped buses
