Every commercial trailer operating in Ontario must display its TARE (empty) weight. MTO inspectors verify this at weigh stations. Missing or illegible TARE markings result in out-of-service orders. What the Law Requires
Ontario HTA
Commercial trailers over 4,500 kg must display TARE weight on both sides. Letters must be at least 50mm (2") tall, durable, and clearly visible.
US DOT (Cross-Border)
For cross-border carriers, TARE weight must be displayed on the power unit AND trailer. Non-compliance triggers out-of-service orders at the border.
National Safety Code
Canada's National Safety Code requires weight markings on commercial vehicles operating interprovincially. Each province enforces via its own highway traffic act.

TARE Weight
The weight of the empty trailer with no cargo, fuel, or passengers. This is the "dry" weight stamped on the manufacturer's plate.
