Ontario School Bus Lettering Requirements

Everything operators, school boards, and fleet managers need to know about O.Reg 612 and CSA D250 marking requirements for Ontario school buses.

Ontario school bus marking requirements are governed by two primary authorities: Ontario Regulation 612 under the Highway Traffic Act, and the CSA D250 standard for school bus construction. Together, these define exactly what must appear on every school bus operating in the province — from letter heights to colour specifications.

Regulatory Framework: O.Reg 612 + CSA D250

Ontario Regulation 612 (School Buses) under the Highway Traffic Act establishes provincial requirements for school bus identification, safety equipment, and markings. It works alongside the national CSA D250 standard, which sets construction and marking specifications for all school buses manufactured for use in Canada.

The interplay between these two regulations means:

  • CSA D250 governs manufacturer-applied markings — "SCHOOL BUS" lettering, bus body colour (Chrome Yellow), stop arm markings, and conspicuity markings
  • O.Reg 612 governs operator-applied markings — operator/board name, bus identification number, seating capacity, and accessibility symbols
Our lettering kits focus on the operator-specific markings required by O.Reg 612 — the markings that change per fleet and must be applied by each operator.

Recommendation: While O.Reg 612 specifies 50mm minimum for operator name, we recommend 3" (75mm) for improved readability during MTO roadside inspections. Our Standard kit includes both operator name and bus ID number at regulation-compliant heights.

Colour and Contrast Requirements

All school bus markings must be in a contrasting colour to the bus body. Since Ontario school buses must be Chrome Yellow (National School Bus Yellow per CSA D250), lettering is typically black for maximum contrast.

  • Bus body: Chrome Yellow (CSA D250 specification)
  • Standard lettering: Black on Chrome Yellow provides maximum contrast
  • Reflective lettering: Available for buses operating on early-morning or evening routes — see our Reflective vs Standard guide

Accessibility Symbol Requirements

Buses equipped with wheelchair accessibility features must display the International Symbol of Access (ISA) at a minimum size of 15cm × 15cm. This applies to:

  • Buses with wheelchair lifts or ramps
  • Buses with wheelchair securement positions
  • Any bus designated as an accessible school purpose vehicle

Our Full Kit variant includes the accessibility symbol decal pre-sized to the 15cm minimum.

Manufacturer vs Operator Markings

Applied by the manufacturer (CSA D250)

  • "SCHOOL BUS" front and rear (200mm minimum)
  • Chrome Yellow body paint
  • Stop arm with "STOP" lettering
  • Rear no-passing signs (Figures 1 and 2 in O.Reg 612)
  • Conspicuity markings (reflective tape, per manufacture date)

Applied by the operator (O.Reg 612 — our kits)

  • Operator / school board name (50mm+ height)
  • Bus identification / unit number (100mm+ height)
  • Seating capacity
  • Accessibility symbol (if applicable)
  • Emergency contact information

MTO Inspections and Penalties

MTO inspectors verify all school bus markings during annual safety inspections. Non-compliant markings can result in:

  • Out-of-service order — bus cannot operate until corrections are made
  • Fines of $400 to $2,000 per offence under HTA s. 175
  • Impact on operating authority — repeated violations can affect licence renewals
  • Insurance implications — non-compliance noted on inspection records

Common inspection failures related to markings include faded or peeling lettering, incorrect letter heights, missing bus identification numbers, and absent accessibility symbols on equipped buses.

School Bus Marking Compliance Checklist

  1. Operator / board name displayed on both sides — minimum 50mm (2") height
  2. Bus identification number on front, rear, and both sides — minimum 100mm (4") height
  3. Seating capacity displayed and legible
  4. Accessibility symbol (15cm × 15cm) present on accessible buses
  5. All markings in contrasting colour (black on Chrome Yellow)
  6. No fading, peeling, or damage to existing markings
  7. Operator name matches operating authority registration exactly
  8. "SCHOOL BUS" lettering intact (front and rear, manufacturer-applied)

FAQ: School Bus Lettering Requirements

Can I use magnetic signs for school bus identification?

No. All school bus identification markings must be permanently affixed per O.Reg 612. Magnetic or removable signs do not comply. Our cast vinyl decals are permanent and rated 7+ years outdoor.

Do charter buses used for school purposes need the same markings?

Vehicles designated as "school purposes vehicles" under the HTA have specific marking requirements that differ from regular school buses. Contact MTO for your specific designation requirements.

How often should school bus markings be replaced?

Replace markings when they become faded, peeling, cracked, or no longer meet minimum height requirements. Our vinyl is rated 7+ years but annual inspection before the school year is recommended.
