MTO Inspection Warning

Ontario MTO inspectors check compliance lettering at roadside scales (Vineland, Fort Erie, Port Hope) and during CVSE blitzes. A missing or non-compliant decal triggers an immediate out-of-service order — your truck stays parked until it's fixed. The fine is $250-$500, but the lost revenue from downtime is typically 10x more. Get compliant before you get caught.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my vehicle fails an MTO inspection for missing lettering?

You can receive an immediate fine ($250-$500 for first offence), an out-of-service order that takes your vehicle off the road, and a negative mark on your CVOR safety rating that can increase your insurance rates.

Do I need reflective lettering or is standard vinyl enough?

Standard vinyl meets the legal minimum for most applications. Reflective vinyl exceeds the requirement and is recommended for vehicles that operate at night, emergency vehicles, and any situation where maximum visibility is important.

How long does compliance lettering last?

Our premium outdoor vinyl is rated for 7+ years of outdoor exposure. It resists UV fading, rain, snow, road salt, and car washes. We guarantee the lettering will remain legible for the full rated life.

Can I install the lettering myself?

Yes. Every order ships with pre-spaced transfer tape, a squeegee, and step-by-step instructions. Installation takes 10-15 minutes. No professional installer needed.

What size lettering do I need?

It depends on the regulation. CVOR requires minimum 50mm (2 inches). USDOT requires 57mm (2.25 inches). Boat numbers require 75mm (3 inches). Snowmobile numbers have a maximum of 76mm. Use our checklist above to find the exact requirement for your vehicle.
