Ontario Fire Route Sign Requirements 2026 — Complete O.Reg 213/07 Guide

What Is a Fire Route?

A fire route is a road, lane, or passageway on private property designated for emergency vehicle access. Fire routes must remain clear and unobstructed at all times so fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles can respond to incidents.

Under O.Reg 213/07 (Ontario Fire Code, Division B, Part 2), property owners must:

  • Designate fire routes in accordance with local by-laws
  • Post fire route signs at each entrance and at maximum 15-metre intervals
  • Ensure signs meet minimum size, material, and visibility requirements
  • Maintain signs in legible condition

Minimum Size: 300mm × 450mm (12" × 18")

Text Colour: Red (fire engine red)
Material: Aluminum with reflective sheeting
Durability: 7-year minimum outdoor rating

Placement Rules

  • Entrances: One sign at each entrance to the fire route
  • Intervals: Additional signs at intervals not exceeding 15 metres
  • Height: Bottom of sign 1.5m (5 feet) above grade
  • Visibility: Must be visible from both directions of travel
  • No obstruction: Not blocked by vegetation, vehicles, or structures
