Questions Before a Cross-Border Trip
I already have CVOR lettering — what do I add for US trips?
For a covered self-propelled vehicle, display the operating carrier's legal or single trade name and USDOT number on both sides, in sharp contrast and legible from 50 feet in daylight under 49 CFR 390.21. MC and GVWR are not required exterior items under that rule. Check separate authority and weight rules for your trip.
Does my USDOT number go on both doors?
Yes. FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21 requires the USDOT number on both sides of the power unit, readable from 50 feet (15 metres) during daylight. The text should be in a colour that contrasts with the vehicle background. Ontario CVOR is handled separately as certificate/documentation under HTA s.16(3)(a); any exterior CVOR reference is professional fleet ID unless a named authority says otherwise.
What about TARE weight?
TARE and other weight displays are separate from the items required by 49 CFR 390.21. Check the applicable state or provincial rules before adding a weight marking.
What do US DOT officers look for at Lewiston-Queenston?
At border inspections, officers may check whether the legal or trade name and USDOT number match the carrier record, appear on both sides, contrast sharply, and are legible from 50 feet in daylight under FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21. Verify current inspection consequences before crossing.
I run into Quebec too — is it different?
Quebec uses the NSC (National Safety Code) system administered by SAAQ. Requirements are separate from Ontario CVOR and the carrier identification number format is different. Keep Ontario CVOR documentation current for Ontario operations, and verify any Quebec exterior marking requirement with the named provincial authority.
Can I put all the numbers on one door decal?

2026 DOT Cross-Border Regulation Changes
FMCSA moved registration work to Motus in 2026. Check current registration status and the temporary biennial-update notice; do not assume an automatic inactivation from an old filing date. Hours-of-service and ELD obligations depend on the driver and operation, so verify the applicable rules separately rather than using a blanket distance test.
