CVOR Sticker Requirements Ontario — Cab Card vs Fleet Decals

Ontario requires the CVOR certificate to be carried in the vehicle. O.Reg 424/97 does not require exterior CVOR stickers, door lettering, or a 50 mm display. Here is how to separate the legal cab-card rule from useful fleet decals.

CVOR Sticker vs. CVOR Lettering

There is an important distinction: the CVOR "sticker" many carriers refer to is actually the CVOR cab card or certificate — a document carried inside the vehicle. Exterior CVOR reference decals are professional fleet identification, not an Ontario display requirement under O.Reg 424/97.

CVOR Cab Card Requirements

The CVOR cab card is a wallet-sized card or document that must be carried in every vehicle operating under your CVOR certificate. It shows your CVOR number, carrier name, and vehicle information. MTO inspectors will ask to see the cab card during roadside inspections. Keep one in the glove box of every power unit.

Exterior CVOR Display Requirements

Ontario O.Reg 424/97 does not require exterior CVOR number display, operator-name display, 50 mm lettering, or permanent door decals. Exterior CVOR references, company names, GVW-style text, and unit numbers are useful for professional fleet identification. US-bound carriers should display legal name and USDOT number under FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21.

Acceptable Materials for CVOR Decals

Cast vinyl decals rated for 5+ years outdoor exposure are the industry standard for long-term fleet identification. They withstand Ontario winters, salt, UV, and pressure washing. Calendered vinyl may shrink or lift on curved surfaces within 1-2 years. Magnetic signs can work for temporary business identification but are not ideal for permanent fleet branding.

Common CVOR Sticker Mistakes

Common practical mistakes include stale company names, old CVOR references, faded or illegible lettering, poor colour contrast, and using an Ontario CVOR claim when the real legal marking requirement is US USDOT display.

Compliance Risk to Separate

Ontario CVOR risk starts with carrying the current certificate in the cab. There is no verified Ontario fine or out-of-service claim for missing exterior CVOR decals in O.Reg 424/97. US-bound carriers must separately satisfy FMCSA USDOT marking rules.
