Is Your Truck Ready for an MTO Inspection?
Check every item MTO officers verify during a roadside stop. Fix what is wrong before you get pulled over. This checklist covers lettering, documents, lights, brakes, and tires.
1. Vehicle Identification (Lettering)
This is the section most often cited during roadside inspections. If any of these fail, your truck can be placed out-of-service immediately.
If any of these fail:
Carry the CVOR certificate in the cab. Order professional CVOR reference decals at compliancelettering.ca/cvor/ — ships in 1-2 business days.
2. Documents
3. Lights and Signals
4. Brakes
5. Tires
6. General Vehicle Condition
What Happens If You Fail
| Violation Type | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Missing CVOR certificate in cab | Carry the current certificate; no verified exterior CVOR marking rule in O.Reg 424/97. |
| Missing documents | Fine + out-of-service until produced. |
| Brake defects | Immediate out-of-service. |
| Light defects | Fine. Multiple failures may trigger OOS. |
| Tire defects | Fine. Severe issues trigger OOS. |
All violations add points to your Carrier Safety Rating (CSR). Enough points triggers MTO facility audits, intervention, or loss of operating authority.
