Fire Department Connection (FDC) Signs — Ontario Building Code Required

The Ontario Building Code (OBC 3.2.5.16) requires every building equipped with a standpipe or sprinkler system to have a clearly identified Fire Department Connection (FDC) sign. These signs direct firefighters to the external connection point where they attach hose lines to supplement the building's fire suppression system. Without a visible, compliant FDC sign, firefighters lose critical seconds during an emergency — seconds that determine whether a fire is contained or becomes catastrophic.

Our FDC signs are manufactured to meet Ontario Building Code and National Fire Code of Canada requirements. Printed on heavy-gauge aluminium with UV-stable inks, these signs are built to remain legible and intact for 7+ years in Canadian weather conditions — from -40°C winter storms to direct summer sun.

Who Needs FDC Signs?

  • Commercial buildings — offices, warehouses, retail plazas, industrial facilities
  • Multi-residential buildings — apartments, condominiums, townhouse complexes (3+ storeys)
  • Hotels and motels — any lodging with sprinkler or standpipe systems
  • Hospitals and care facilities — long-term care, retirement homes, medical centres
  • Schools and universities — educational institutions with fire suppression systems
  • Shopping centres and malls — complex buildings with multiple connection points
  • Places of worship — churches, mosques, temples with sprinkler systems
  • Parking garages — above and below grade with standpipe systems

Regulatory Requirements

Specification Requirement Legal Reference
Sign Required All buildings with standpipe or sprinkler FDC OBC 3.2.5.16
Content "FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION" + system type (sprinkler/standpipe/combined) NFPA 13, OBC 3.2.5.16
Visibility Visible from fire department access route OBC 3.2.5.13
Colour Red background with white text (standard); reflective recommended NFPA 170
Durability Weather-resistant, permanent, non-fading OBC 1.1.2.1
Penalty $500–$10,000 per Fire Code violation; building orders may halt occupancy FPPA s. 28
⚠️ Building Inspector Notice: Missing or deteriorated FDC signs are flagged during fire safety inspections and annual fire prevention reviews. Property managers who fail to maintain FDC signage may receive compliance orders that restrict building occupancy until corrected. This is one of the simplest and most affordable fixes available.

Sign Specifications

  • Material: 0.040" heavy-gauge aluminium — rust-proof, impact-resistant
  • Print: Red background with bold white lettering — maximum contrast for emergency visibility
  • Durability: UV-stable inks rated for 7+ years of outdoor exposure in Canadian climate
  • Mounting: Pre-drilled corner holes for screws, bolts, or standoff mounting
  • Customisation: System type (SPRINKLER, STANDPIPE, COMBINED), building address, floor zone
  • Compliance: Meets OBC 3.2.5.16, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, and NFPA 170 colour standards

Placement Requirements

FDC signs must be installed directly above or adjacent to the fire department connection, visible from the fire access route. For buildings with multiple FDC points, each connection requires its own sign indicating the zone or system it serves. Signs should be mounted at a height of 1.5 to 2.4 metres above grade for optimal visibility. We include mounting hardware with every order.

Serving All of Ontario

We ship FDC signs to property managers, building owners, and fire safety contractors across Ontario — including Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Mississauga, Brampton, Ottawa, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Barrie, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay. Most orders ship same business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information goes on an FDC sign?

At minimum, the sign must read "FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION" and identify the system type — AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER, STANDPIPE, or COMBINED. For buildings with multiple connections, each sign should also indicate the zone, floor range, or wing it serves (e.g., "SPRINKLER — FLOORS 1-10, EAST WING"). We custom-print all text to your building's specifications.

My building already has an FDC sign but it's faded. Do I need to replace it?

Yes. The Ontario Fire Code requires all safety signage to be legible and in good condition. Faded, cracked, or obscured FDC signs are routinely cited during fire inspections. A replacement sign is one of the lowest-cost compliance fixes a building owner can make — and it could save lives during an emergency. Our aluminium signs are guaranteed against fading for 7 years.

Who is responsible for maintaining FDC signs — the building owner or the tenant?

Under the Ontario Fire Code, the building owner (or their designated agent, typically the property manager) is responsible for all life safety signage, including FDC signs. This responsibility cannot be transferred to tenants. Fire inspectors will issue orders directly to the registered owner if signs are missing or non-compliant.
