What Ontario accessibility law does and does not say

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the Integrated Accessibility Standards do not prescribe one universal package of entrance, washroom, elevator and room signs for every Ontario business. Duties depend on the organization, space and project.

The Design of Public Spaces standard generally applies to covered public spaces that are newly constructed or redeveloped. It contains specific sign provisions for uses such as recreational trailheads and accessible parking. Accessible parking signs use separate prescribed requirements and should be ordered through the dedicated parking-sign offer.

For applicable construction and renovation projects, Ontario Building Code Division B, Article 3.8.3.1 addresses accessibility signs for specified building features, including visual, tactile, Braille and placement requirements. Confirm the site schedule and applicable specification with the owner, designer, building official, inspector or accessibility consultant.

Fire-safety sign boundary

General accessibility room and wayfinding signs are not approved by the Office of the Fire Marshal. Ontario Fire Code provisions apply to signs with a fire-safety function. A small catalog Exit wayfinding sign is not a substitute for a required illuminated life-safety exit sign.
