Equipment Identification Markings
Heavy equipment operating on construction sites and public roads must display identification markings:
Safety & Warning Decals
Under OHSA and CSA standards, heavy equipment must display hazard and warning decals at point-of-danger locations:
- Pinch point warnings — at hydraulic arms, bucket pivots, boom joints, and articulation points
- Crush hazard — around tracks, wheels, outriggers, and stabilizer pads
- Electrical hazard — near electrical systems, batteries, and alternators
- Fall hazard — at access ladders, platforms, and cab entry/exit points
- Entanglement warning — at PTO shafts, augers, and rotating equipment
- Hot surface — exhaust manifolds, mufflers, and hydraulic components
- High pressure — hydraulic lines and accumulators
- Operating instructions — control identification decals inside the cab
Replace any faded, peeling, or missing safety decals immediately. Under OHSA, the equipment owner is responsible for maintaining all safety markings in legible condition.

Load Rating & Capacity Markings
Equipment with rated lifting or carrying capacity must display load charts and capacity markings:
- Mobile cranes: Load chart visible from the operator position — must show capacity at every radius and boom length
- Forklifts: Nameplate showing rated capacity, load centre, and mast tilt limits
- Telehandlers: Load chart showing capacity at each boom extension and angle
- Hoists & winches: Safe working load (SWL) displayed at the operating point
- Aerial work platforms: Platform capacity, number of occupants, and wind speed limits
Road Travel Requirements
Heavy equipment traveling on public roads in Ontario must comply with the Highway Traffic Act in addition to construction regulations:
- Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign — fluorescent orange triangle on rear of equipment traveling under 40 km/h
- Headlights and tail lights — functioning lights required for road travel, even during daylight
- Reflective tape — conspicuity marking on rear and sides for equipment operating near roadways at night
- Wide load markings — if equipment exceeds 2.6 m width, requires oversize load signs and permits
- Company name & GVW — required on both sides for registered equipment
- Escort vehicles — required for equipment exceeding certain width and weight thresholds
Slow Moving Vehicle Signs
Under the Highway Traffic Act, any vehicle or equipment designed to travel at speeds below 40 km/h on public roads must display a Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign:
This applies to: excavators, graders, rollers, pavers, farm tractors, and any self-propelled equipment designed for speeds under 40 km/h. See our complete SMV guide for full details.
Mobile Crane Specific Markings
Mobile cranes have additional marking requirements under CSA Z150 (Mobile Cranes) and O.Reg 213/91:
- Load chart: Must be legible from the operator position and match the crane's current configuration (boom length, counterweight, outrigger position)
- Maximum line speed: Displayed near each winch
- Boom angle indicator: Must be functional and visible
- Anti-two-block warning: Decal and functional system
- Outrigger position: Markings showing fully extended and intermediate positions
- Electrical hazard: Warning decal about maintaining safe distance from power lines (minimum 3 metres under O.Reg 213/91 s.188)
- Annual inspection certificate: Current inspection sticker per CSA Z150
Provincial Requirements
While federal standards (CMVSS) apply to all equipment, provinces add their own requirements:
Ontario
O.Reg 213/91 governs equipment on construction projects. CVOR required if equipment GVW exceeds 4,500 kg and is registered for road use. Equipment not registered for road use still needs SMV sign for road travel.
British Columbia
WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Part 16 covers mobile equipment. Requires conspicuity marking, backup alarms, and operator qualification records displayed in cab.
Alberta
Alberta OHS Code Part 25 covers mobile equipment. Specific requirements for roll-over protective structures (ROPS) markings and falling object protective structures (FOPS) certification labels.
Quebec
CNESST regulations require French-language safety decals on all equipment operating in Quebec.
