Ontario Fire Code O.Reg 213/07 section 6.2.3.7 requires that fire extinguishers located in cabinets, recesses, or out of direct sight must be marked with a sign that indicates their location. This applies to virtually every non-residential building in Ontario.
The rule is practical: if a visitor, employee, or first responder would have to search for the extinguisher during a fire emergency, a sign is mandatory. Buildings without signs are cited by fire inspectors during routine inspections.
⚠️ MTO / Fire Inspector Warning
Missing fire extinguisher signs are one of the top-10 Fire Code violations cited in Ontario commercial inspections. A compliance order from the fire marshal carries mandatory correction timelines — typically 30 days. Repeat violations: fines of $10,000–$50,000 for corporations.

Which Buildings Need Fire Extinguisher Signs?
The Ontario Fire Code applies to all buildings except single-family homes. Signs are required wherever extinguishers are installed:
- Retail stores, restaurants, and offices
- Warehouses, industrial facilities, and manufacturing plants
- Apartment buildings and condominiums (common areas)
- Schools, hospitals, and care facilities
- Commercial garages and service centres
- Construction sites (portable extinguishers, temporary signage)
Even if an extinguisher hangs on an open wall, a sign above it improves findability under stress and satisfies the inspector's "immediately visible" test.
Placement & Height Requirements
Signs must be positioned so they can be seen from the normal approach path — not just from directly in front of the extinguisher:
- Direct location sign: mounted directly above the extinguisher; bottom at least 2,000 mm from floor
- Directional (arrow) sign: placed at corridor intersections or aisle ends, pointing toward the extinguisher — required when the unit is around a corner or behind a door
- Cabinet signs: a pictogram on the cabinet door is usually sufficient if the cabinet is on the main travel path
Mounting above eye level (2,000 mm minimum) ensures signs are visible over shelving, racking, and crowds — a common inspection citation when signs are placed too low.
Sign Specifications
The Ontario Fire Code references CAN/ULC-S563 and NFPA 10 for fire extinguisher signage. Compliant signs show:
- ISO 7010 F001 fire extinguisher pictogram (red on white, or white on red)
- Minimum 200 mm × 200 mm for location signs
- Arrow and text for directional signs (larger format recommended)
- Photoluminescent or reflective material recommended for low-light areas
- Legible from at least 20 metres under normal conditions
Inspection, Maintenance & Tags
Signs are part of the extinguisher inspection record. Under OFC s.6.2.3.5:
- Monthly visual check: confirm sign is in place, legible, and unobstructed
- Annual professional service: extinguisher + signage condition recorded on the inspection tag
- Missing or faded signs: must be replaced immediately — a faded sign is treated as a missing sign during inspection
Penalties for Missing Fire Extinguisher Signs
| Violation | First Offence | Repeat Offence |
|---|---|---|
| Missing location sign | Compliance order (30-day fix) | $10,000–$50,000 (corporation) |
| Missing extinguisher | Immediate violation notice | Mandatory fine + stop-work order |
| Obstructed extinguisher | Compliance order | Escalating fines |
| Expired inspection tag | Violation + re-inspection required | $10,000+ corporate fine |
