Fire Extinguisher Sign Requirements Ontario

The Ontario Fire Code requires fire extinguisher location signs in all commercial, industrial, and multi-residential buildings. Signs should be visible from normal approach paths, mounted at the correct height, and maintained in legible condition. Here are the exact requirements.

When Are Fire Extinguisher Signs Required?

Fire extinguisher location signs are required in all buildings where fire extinguishers are installed — which is virtually every commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-residential building in Ontario. If the extinguisher is not immediately visible from the normal approach path, a sign must indicate its location.

Sign Specifications

Fire extinguisher signs typically show a pictogram of a fire extinguisher with an arrow indicating direction. Red and white colour scheme. Minimum size recommended: 200 mm × 200 mm for location signs, larger for directional signs. Should be visible from normal walking paths. Reflective or photoluminescent for low-light visibility.

Placement & Height Rules

Mount fire extinguisher signs directly above the extinguisher or at the end of the aisle/corridor where the extinguisher is located. Bottom of sign should be at least 2,000 mm from floor (above normal sight line). Arrow signs at corridor intersections pointing toward the nearest extinguisher.

Inspection Tags & Monthly Checks

Fire extinguishers should be inspected monthly (visual check) and annually (professional service). The inspection tag must show the date, inspector initials, and status. Missing or expired inspection tags are a common Fire Code violation.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Missing fire extinguisher signs: compliance order from fire inspector. Missing extinguishers: immediate Fire Code violation. Blocked or obstructed extinguishers: compliance order. Missing inspection tags: violation with potential fine. Repeat violations: $10,000-$50,000 for corporations.
