When Are Fire Extinguisher Signs Required?
Fire extinguisher location signs are required in all buildings where fire extinguishers are installed — which is virtually every commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-residential building in Ontario. If the extinguisher is not immediately visible from the normal approach path, a sign must indicate its location.
Sign Specifications
Fire extinguisher signs typically show a pictogram of a fire extinguisher with an arrow indicating direction. Red and white colour scheme. Minimum size recommended: 200 mm × 200 mm for location signs, larger for directional signs. Should be visible from normal walking paths. Reflective or photoluminescent for low-light visibility.

Placement & Height Rules
Mount fire extinguisher signs directly above the extinguisher or at the end of the aisle/corridor where the extinguisher is located. Bottom of sign should be at least 2,000 mm from floor (above normal sight line). Arrow signs at corridor intersections pointing toward the nearest extinguisher.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
